Santa Monica Airlines (SMA) was founded in 1978 by Skip Engblom, co-founder of Jeff Ho Surfboards and Zephyr Productions and a key figure behind the Zephyr / Z-Boys skate team.

Early boards were hand-shaped; the brand was based in Santa Monica, California, and linked to Westside / Dogtown skate culture. Notable rider Natas Kaupas helped define early street skating on SMA.

SMA has operated under different distribution arrangements over time, including periods with NHS. Product focus is skate decks and related hardgoods with heritage West Coast graphics and shapes.
