Volcom was founded in 1991 in Orange County, California, by Richard Woolcott and Tucker Hall after a Tahoe snowboarding trip. They started with about $5,000 and ran early sales from bedrooms in Newport and Huntington Beach.

Incorporated as Stone Boardwear, Inc., the company did business as Volcom from June 1991. First-year clothing sales were about $2,600. The brand was built around skateboarding, surfing, and snowboarding.

Volcom designs and markets apparel and related products for boardsports culture. It went public in 2005 and was later acquired; the Volcom trademark is held by ABG-Volcom, LLC.
