About Western Edition
Western Edition Skateboards began in San Francisco in 1999, founded by Kent Uyehara and Ian Johnson. The name comes from the city’s Western Addition neighborhood.
Johnson has described starting the company after returning from college while working at FTC, with early riders including Bart Fonseca Jones and Alex Klein; Pat Washington became an early pro.
The brand’s style mixes midcentury Black American music, early modernism, San Francisco history, athletics, and mid-1990s skateboarding, with a strong graphic identity led by Johnson.
